SUMMARY

A majority of Italians (56%) say their country is on the wrong track while 45% remain consistent supporters of democracy. By a 4-to-1 margin, Italians say their satisfaction with democracy has decreased (42%), as opposed to increased (10%), since the Russian attack on Ukraine. Only 21% strongly agree (total agree 55%) that  Russian aggression is a threat to Italy’s democracy.

Two-thirds of Italians (67%) say Russia’s reasons for invading Ukraine are not legitimate. But only 43% blame Putin directly for the war.

Just 9% of Italians have a very favorable opinion of the European Union – tied with Hungary. And only 12% strongly support (total support 45%) allowing Ukrainian refugees to remain in Italy for up to three years.
